New Kent County, Virginia — Local officials are actively exploring solutions to address traffic congestion at Exit 211 on Interstate 64, a concern that has grown among residents and commuters. The issue has been exacerbated by recent road modifications linked to the ongoing I-64 Gap Widening Project.
On Sunday morning, County Supervisor Amy M. Pearson and Sheriff Lee Bailey issued a joint statement acknowledging the community’s frustrations. They highlighted that complaints have surged due to the reduction of the exit lane to a single lane, a consequence of Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) enhancements designed to improve safety and traffic flow.
In response, VDOT has installed traffic lights on all three approaches to the interchange to facilitate movement. Despite some reports of delays, Pearson mentioned she personally travels the area daily and has yet to encounter significant issues. Nonetheless, she expressed understanding of residents’ concerns and openness to potential solutions.
“Closing the exit entirely could compromise emergency response and public safety access,” Pearson emphasized.
The project, which includes bridge replacements, widening, and other infrastructure improvements, is part of a broader effort to bolster transportation in the region. Back in June, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced a $20 million investment to support the I-64 and Exit 211 improvements, aiming to accommodate the area’s rapid growth and economic development.
Youngkin underscored the strategic importance of the corridor, noting its proximity to the Port of Virginia and the influx of new investments. The widening project is expected to generate over 2,000 new jobs and attract approximately $2.25 billion in economic activity, benefiting both the county and the state.
Additional developments in the area include plans for new commercial centers, such as distribution facilities for AutoZone and Target, along with the upcoming Buc-ee’s travel center, which is expected to further increase traffic volume.
During Sunday’s meeting, Sheriff Bailey requested increased patrols at the interchange, asking deputies to monitor the area when available. He also urged residents to report incidents promptly to the sheriff’s office or by dialing 911, to help authorities assess the situation and liaise with VDOT and project contractors.
In ongoing discussions, Pearson mentioned the possibility of creating a turning lane from Emmaus Church Road to eastbound I-64, which could alleviate backups near the Burger King at 6707 Emmaus Church Road. The community’s feedback will play a crucial role in shaping future traffic management strategies.
Officials continue to invite residents to share their concerns and report issues. A meeting is scheduled to further evaluate potential solutions aimed at easing congestion and improving safety at this critical interchange.
