New Kent County, VA — Local officials are actively exploring solutions to address persistent traffic congestion at Exit 211 along Interstate 64, a concern voiced repeatedly by residents and commuters. The issue has gained prominence amid ongoing construction projects that have reduced the interchange to a single lane, creating delays and safety concerns.
On Sunday morning, County Supervisor Amy M. Pearson and Sheriff Lee Bailey issued a joint statement acknowledging the community’s frustrations. The congestion is linked to the I-64 Gap Widening Project, which involves major infrastructure upgrades including bridge replacements and roadway expansions. To manage traffic flow, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has installed stoplights at all three access points to the single-lane interchange, aiming to regulate the increased demand.
Despite claiming she rarely encounters severe issues during her daily commutes, Pearson expressed understanding of the community’s concerns. She emphasized the importance of maintaining access for emergency responses and public safety, cautioning against complete shutdowns that could hamper medical and accident response efforts.
The governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, highlighted the significance of the project, which received a $20 million investment announced in late June. This funding supports the broader I-64 improvements, including the Exit 211 upgrade, which is expected to spur economic growth by attracting investments and creating over 2,000 jobs. The corridor’s strategic proximity to the Port of Virginia makes it a vital transportation artery for the region’s economic development.
Several commercial developments are planned in the area, including distribution centers for AutoZone and Target, as well as a Buc-ee’s travel center, further underscoring the need for efficient transportation infrastructure.
In response to the congestion, Sheriff Bailey has directed deputies to increase patrols at the interchange, urging residents to report incidents promptly. He also requested the dispatch to monitor the area closely when deputies are available, to better understand the frequency and nature of traffic issues. Bailey encouraged the community to report any incidents to the sheriff’s office or call 911 for emergencies.
Additionally, discussions are underway to implement a dedicated turning lane from Emmaus Church Road onto eastbound I-64, aiming to alleviate traffic buildup near the Burger King at 6707 Emmaus Church Road. County officials plan to hold further meetings with VDOT to develop lasting solutions that balance infrastructure upgrades with community safety needs.
As the project progresses, local authorities remain committed to ensuring that transportation improvements benefit both economic growth and public safety, while addressing the community’s immediate concerns about traffic congestion.
