In a swift law enforcement response, Virginia State Police captured 19-year-old Jason Allen Glidewell II in Brunswick County following a fatal shooting on Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County. The incident resulted in the death of 20-year-old Hunter A. Bates, a Colonial Heights native, whose vehicle was found off the road after the shooting.
The arrest occurred late Wednesday evening after authorities received information from an acquaintance of Glidewell, who indicated the suspect intended to surrender himself. Authorities located Glidewell at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta, Brunswick County, where he was taken into custody without resistance. He is now held without bond at the same facility, facing charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Glidewell’s arrest follows a series of police investigations that began when officers responded to a deadly crash scene on August 28 at mile marker 5 on I-85. The vehicle involved, a Honda Civic, had veered off the highway into a culvert. Bates was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities also revealed that Glidewell faces unrelated misdemeanor charges from Nottoway County. His upcoming court appearance is scheduled for Thursday morning at Mecklenburg County General District Court.
This case underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence and reckless driving along major highways. The investigation continues as police seek to piece together the events leading to the shooting, emphasizing the importance of swift law enforcement intervention in highway violence cases.
